While sunny days are the ideal weather for towing your travel trailer, you can’t always bank on the weather being nice. Rainy weather creates unsafe driving conditions that require you to change how you drive in order to avoid an accident. This becomes especially important when you’re towing a travel trailer. Here are some tips on how to make sure that your travel trailer gets to its destination safely, even in a rainstorm.

Perform an Inspection

Ensuring the security of your hitch and towing chains before you depart is essential to avoid the travel trailer becoming unattached during transit. You’ll also want to check the pressure and condition of the tires on both your towing vehicle and your travel trailer to make sure they’ll get good traction on wet roads.

Don’t Speed

Driving too fast is something you should avoid in general, but it’s really important when you’re towing a travel trailer, especially if the weather is poor. Your visibility is reduced and it’ll take you longer to bring your towing setup to a full stop. Try to stay at least ten miles below the posted speed limit and don’t be afraid to slow down more if you have to; stick to the right-most lane of traffic to allow other drivers to pass you.
