Learning About Motorhome Classes
If you want a recreational vehicle that doesn’t require any towing, then you want a motorhome. Motorhomes come with their own engines and driving cabs, so all you have to do is pack them up and go, without worrying about hitching up a towing vehicle and making sure that your car or truck is in good condition for a long road trip.
It’s important to know, however, that motorhomes are divided up into three “classes,” since each of them differs significantly. Some models may be more suitable for your traveling needs than others.
Class A
As the largest type of motorhome, Class A motorhomes are built on a bus-style chassis and tend to have a panoramic windshield and a driving cab with swivel seats that integrate into the motorhome’s general living quarters. With lengths of up to 45’ and room for several passengers, Class A motorhomes are ideal for large families and for living on the road full-time. They can be somewhat tricky to learn to drive and they don’t fit everywhere, though, so some practice and planning ahead is in order.
Class B
If you want something small and compact, the van-style Class B motorhome might be more your speed. Ideal for couples and solo travelers, Class B motorhomes operate very similarly to your standard minivan, so they’re not too challenging to learn how to drive and they’ll fit into basically any parking space or campsite you can think of. Amenities are simple, but sufficient for your camping needs.
Class C
These motorhomes resemble a truck, with a separate driving cab beneath an overhang. The overhang is a sort of alcove within the motorhome’s living space, which could either serve as a sleeping bunk or a storage area. Class C motorhomes are good for small families and smaller traveling groups and they’ll offer comparable amenities to a Class A model, but they tend to be more compact.
