A Guide to Hitching Your Fifth Wheel
Fifth wheels are a versatile and comfortable type of recreational vehicle. These towable trailers require you to have a truck that can handle the coupling for their hitch. Hitching up your fifth wheel for the first time can be challenging, but it’s not too hard to master. It’s better to practice before you start your travels so that you do not find yourself stranded on your trip.
Aligning Your Vehicles
First, you’ll want to ensure that your truck and fifth wheel are on even, flat ground, before you back your truck up to meet your trailer’s hitch. You’ll want to be a few feet away from the fifth wheel, with enough room to lower your truck’s tailgate. Make sure that the fifth wheel’s kingpin is high enough to reach the coupling in your truck and open up the jaws so that it can hitch up successfully.
Attaching the Hitch
Set the trailer to the top line level of your hitch and ease it into the coupling. The coupling and hitch should connect smoothly, without resistance. Check that the kingpin jaws are locked in place before you lock the safety latch and set the safety pin. Check the hitch once more before you depart.
